Beasties are found drawn in margins of medieval illuminated manuscripts. The illuminations are more serious and generally are painted. The beasties appear to be more like pencil drawings or charcoal or ? I believe that it was when the crusaders came home, through Turkey and learned of the pain killer called "poppy juice," that these beasties became so unusual. Two heads and one body is a common theme as is two bodies with one head, they also tended to dress the beasties with crowns and quite frequently neck or head scarves. Then the French, in the 13th centurary, got silly and developed humorous beasties called drolleries. We get droll humor from these critters. I've just encounted them researching beaties for the Rompin' Good Time section -- more to come.
