I am fascinated by radio and the magic of sound traveling invisably through the air we breathe. The sights, sounds and imagined images constantly tease my imagination. For the listener to hear the radio sounds, a mircophone is an essential element.

As human beings, we constantly are speaking to the rest of humanity. While most speech is directed and heard by a small number of humans, I've often wondored what partiuclar microphone shape would define a certain public person. The microphones displayed on this Web Site define some of those questions and subsequent conclusions.

One last thought - symbols are an essential part of the human existance. But, for the artist the question is whose symbols? The symbols that history and society pass along to us OR symbols that the artist creates? With this question in mind, I have decided to create my own symbols for each mircophone. My symbols will be outlined for each piece.

"Condit's Microphone" 2001, fabricated conduit, real micro-microphone, ribbon, real microphone base and flag cloth

SYMBOLS: Conduit for comment Gary Condit made about being a conduit during Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinski matter, Red, white and blue gros grain ribbon for USA and political whoha, micro microphone with switch turned off since Gary Condit never says anything, microphone cord wrapped and knotted since Gary Condit seems to like bondage, United Airlines tag for the Steardess he was romancing, the two conduit frames spin like the way Condit spins the newsmedia, American flags cloth for Washigton D. C. and all that that conjures up in your mind!

"Foot In Mouth Microphone," Insert Foot and Speak, We've All Done It!" 2001, fabricated wood shoe trees, aluminum, brass, paper, braided plug-in cord and real microphone base.

I was walking through a Thrift Shop and spyed a pair of shoe trees and instantly envisioned the entre microphone. The shoe trees represent the foot (feet) we all put in our mouths when we speak. Enough said? The perforated aluminum meash is the wind screen for the microphone with red paper underneath to stand for embarrasment when we say the wrong thing, the end of the spring shoe tree backs have wind screens as if no matter what you say or where you say it the sound is picked up and broadcast to humanity - whew, the braided shoe string for the connect cord seeemed like a natural ext3nsion of my humor to connect the piece to the amplifier with four connectioins, HA HA.
